How we calculate these shares
Each technology's share is its own deployment-record count divided by 60,659,227, the total records across all technologies nationwide. Satellite's 53.2% share and fiber's 4.3% share both come from that same denominator, so they're directly comparable to each other and to every other technology on the technology breakdown page.

How we calculate this mix
Every one of the 2,141 providers in the providers table carries a state_count, the number of distinct states or territories it has at least one deployment record in. Bucketing providers by that count and summing their total_records per bucket produces the provider-share and record-share columns above, the same underlying figures as the footprint table further up this page, just reported two different ways: by number of providers, and by number of records.
How Americans Are Connected
Every connection technology ranked by reported deployment records, census-block locations where providers report availability. Satellite and fixed wireless blanket the map from a few towers and dishes, while fiber, the fastest tier, still reaches the fewest places.

The Federal Communications Commission requires all facilities-based broadband providers in the United States to report where they offer service through Form 477 filings. This creates one of the most comprehensive datasets on internet availability in the country, but the raw data is difficult to access and interpret without technical expertise. PlainBroadband transforms this data into clean, browsable pages organized by provider, state, and technology.
Which providers actually serve your area, what technologies they use, and how your state's coverage compares to the rest of the country - these are the questions Form 477 was built to answer, but the raw federal filing is a multi-gigabyte CSV, not something a consumer or local reporter can query directly. With 2,142 providers reporting across 10 distinct connection technologies, PlainBroadband turns that filing into searchable, browsable pages organized by provider, state, and technology.
